Combine passion, dazzling elegance, and infectious energy together, and you get the remarkable Ballet Hispánico! Hailed as a "masterpiece" by the Chicago Sun-Times, "Carmen" is a Picasso-inspired contemporary take on Bizet's beloved classic. The physically charged and sensual choreography fuses contemporary dance with nods to the Spanish paso doble and flamenco. Stunning set design by Luis Crespo and minimalist black-and-white costumes by fashion designer David Delfin evoke the paintings of Pablo Picasso. Highly original and elaborate partnering, Carmen Maquia is a bold and electrifying reimagining of this tragic tale. DANCECleveland last presented Ballet Hispanico in 2018.
Ballet Hispánico has performed for over two million people on three continents, building a repertory of over 70 works that fuse together Latin dance, theatricality, classical ballet, and modern dance techniques to create a new style of dance that is uniquely, Ballet Hispánico. Recognized for her achievements by the National Medal of Arts, the nation's highest cultural honor, Tina Ramirez founded Ballet Hispánico in 1970. From its grassroots origins as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe, the organization has grown into a world-class company. Often described as poetic and lush, but also fun and exciting, the performance will make audience members of all ages fall for dance during the virtual performance of Carmen.

Agua Furiosa challenges audiences to confront the harsh realities of race in our country. The work was inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest and Oya, the Afro-Cuban deity of wind and storms. Led by artistic director and choreographer Ana María Alvarez, the work utilizes the company's unique, unapologetic movement work rooted in the Afro-Latin Diaspora. Through her choreographic style rooted in dance as protest, Afro-Latin social dance, Dunham and improvisation, and a deeply collaborative process of generating movement in relationship to the company members' unique skill sets and personal narratives, Alvarez and the company create a visually stunning and thought-provoking evening of dance theater performance. Agua Furiosa merges call and response, a live vocalist, storytelling, water themes, and fierce physicality. Audiences walk away from Agua Furiosa, impacted, and inspired to locate themselves inside the complex and transforming conversation of race in America. Creative collaborators include the original cast of Agua Furiosa in addition to sound designer d. sabela grimes, vocalist Pyeng Threadgill, lighting designer Masha Tsimring, costume designer Rosalida Medina and dramaturg Michael Garces.
Founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez in 2005, the company brings to life voices that are not traditionally heard on the concert stage. Rooted in Salsa and Afro-Cuban styles and drawing movement from Hip-Hop, urban, and contemporary dance-theater, the company blends these styles to create a unique movement vocabulary. Ana Maria Alvarez was recently named a 2020 Doris Duke Artist.

"SNAP," choreographed by Micaela Taylor, is inspired by the ethnically diverse, yet isolating crowds of Los Angeles. It urges audiences to "snap out of" the social pressures to conform, to connect with their individuality as well as with people around them. This collaboration with Los Angeles-based Taylor, whose TL Collective was proclaimed one of this year's "discoveries" by The New York Times, returns to her BODYTRAFFIC roots – this time as a breakout choreographer. Taylor's original piece for the company will embody her signature style: an inventive fusion of contemporary dance and theatrical hip-hop. BODYTRAFFIC seamlessly pays homage to traditional styles and techniques while forging the way forward for contemporary dance of today.
"A Trick of The Light," choreographed by Joshua L. Peugh is inspired by the rare "green flash" that occurs just before the sun disappears from view at sunset; this work is colorful and nostalgic. Humorous and lighthearted, this piece will sure to make viewers fall in love with dance over and over.
Founded in 2007, by Lillian Rose Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett, BODYTRAFFIC was quickly deemed "the company of the future" by The Joyce Theater Foundation and listed as one of Dance Magazine's 25 to Watch in 2013. The company continues to make waves from coast to coast with its universal appeal to new audience members and dance lovers alike. Virtuosic, stylized, confident, with a diverse repertoire of some of the world's most sought-after choreographers such as McArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham, Sidra Bell, Barak Marshall, Ohad Naharin, Hofesh Shechter, and others, BODYTRAFFIC offers something for everyone to enjoy. DANCECleveland last presented BODYTRAFFIC in 2016.

Aroundtown (2017) is a kinetic poem that examines the varied, unique, and sometimes divided notions of LOVE- it's meaning, purpose, and platform. With original music, text, and visuals, the work explores commitment, community, and intimacy in times of violence and strife. DDD's trademark empathy, sly humor, and bombastic physicality are harnessed to examine LOVE as both sociopolitical and intimate weather systems.
David Dorfman Dance has created movement that seeks to de-stigmatize the notion of accessibility and interaction in post-modern dance by embracing audiences with visceral, meaningful dance, music, and text. DDD has performed extensively throughout the world. DDD's artistic collaborators have also been honored with eight New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Awards.
