Contemporary dancer gives Lorain High students a master class

LORAIN — A Lorain High School dance class had a special instructor Wednesday morning.

Lloyd Knight, a principal dancer and instructor with the Martha Graham Company, taught a class at the high school ahead of his performance at Dance Cleveland that evening.

He reminded students, ages 14 to 18, that everyone starts dance at different ages, but if they want to continue the craft professionally “you have to mentally be there.”

“All of you have the ability, but you have to go for it,” he said.

Lorain Schools expanded its arts curriculum to include music, visual arts and dance classes across all of its 14 buildings beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

The Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest professional school of dance in the United States. The New York City-based company is named for Martha Graham, a choreographer who created 181 ballets and contemporary dance techniques taught to students of the school and company, according to the company’s website.
