DANCECleveland Kicks off 2024-2025 Season with Community Dance Day

DANCECleveland Kicks off 2024-2025 Season with Community Dance Day

A full day of free movement classes, the Northeast Ohio Student Showcase

and return of ODC/Dance at Playhouse Square

CLEVELAND (June 30, 2024) – DANCECleveland kicks off their 2024-2025 Performance Series July 27 with Community Dance Day across the Playhouse Square District, as well as the Northeast Ohio Student Showcase and an evening performance from San Francisco-based ODC/Dance in the Allen Theatre.

The community-focused day features free movement classes for all ages and abilities in a wide variety of styles including contemporary, ballet, African Drum and Dance, stepping, Hip-hop, tap, barre/Pilates fusion, yoga, jazz and more! Classes start at 10 am and conclude at 2 pm to allow time for the local students to get ready for the Northeast Ohio Student Showcase, which will highlight 12 dance schools from across the region and celebrate the talents of our region’s youth dancers. The showcase will take place at 3 pm in the Allen Theatre.

Sarah Sumbrum, Artistic Director of DANCECleveland, reflects, “Community Dance Day is one of our favorite events and DANCECleveland is happy to give back to our community by providing a fun-filled day where community members can try out a variety of dance styles. You don’t have to have dance experience, anyone can participate, and it’s so much fun to see our younger generation of dancers as well as older adults enjoying movement together. Dance really is a universal language, and it has the ability to bring people of all backgrounds together. We invite everyone to come try out a class, or root on the region’s student dancers during the showcase.”

Community Dance Day features instruction from dance teachers from across Northeast Ohio as well as two special opportunities to take contemporary with company members from ODC/Dance.

Sumbrum continues, “This year we are thrilled to bring back the evening component of Community Dance Day with the return of ODC/dance. The company was founded at Oberlin College before relocating to San Francisco, so it’s a bit of a homecoming every time they return to perform in Northeast Ohio. I can’t think of a better way to kick off the season.”

The versatile and technically superb dancers of ODC/Dance will showcase multiple different pieces featuring everything ranging from balletic beauty to jazzy moves and even a bit of tap dance! Founded by Artistic Director Brenda Way in 1971, ODC/Dance made the jump from Ohio’s Oberlin College to San Francisco in 1976 and transformed into a groundbreaking contemporary dance company that now travels across the globe to critical acclaim. Way, who trained under legendary choreographer George Balanchine, creates smart, exuberant and fearless works that push the boundaries of dance.
