CLEVELAND June 17, 2021 – Following a national search, DANCECleveland announces the appointment of Theresa Remick as its new Executive Director. Remick takes leadership of the 65-year dance presenting organization following the retirement of Pamela Young who held the position for 18 years.
Remick joins DANCECleveland after most recently serving as managing director of the Page Theatre, a three-venue performing arts center at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Under her leadership, the theater thrived with innovative programming, increased operational capacity, substantial growth in funding, and dynamic community engagement.
“Replacing a visionary and heralded executive director is a daunting task, but we are not only confident but elated to have Theresa taking over the reins,” said Mark Williams, President of the DANCECleveland Board of Directors. “Theresa’s expertise, energy, and vision were key attributes of her candidacy – and the values that will drive DANCECleveland forward as we implement the next iteration of our strategic plan and through an uncharted market of reimagining performing arts after a worldwide pandemic.”
With DANCECleveland on sound footing and poised to build on its remarkable history and legacy, it is both an exciting and challenging time for the organization. During COVID-19, DANCECleveland was a forerunner for dance presenters in adapting programming through multi-channel performances, an approach that has effectively established new platforms for bringing contemporary dance to a wider audience moving forward.
“I am thrilled and honored to join DANCECleveland as we enter our 65th season of bringing dance programing to Northeast Ohio. Emerging from the pandemic, community and connection are more important than ever, and DANCECleveland's embodiment of these values immediately caught my attention,” said Remick. “I look forward to collaborating with DANCECleveland's wonderful board, staff, partners, and audiences as we explore new ways to embrace our role as a ‘presenter and more.’”
In addition to her position with the Page Theatre, Remick has held numerous administrative, consulting, and marketing positions with The George Washington University, National Arts Strategies, Washington National Opera, The Metropolitan Opera, and Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts.
She served on the board of the Minnesota Presenters Network from 2015-2021, holding the role of Treasurer for four years, and on the Winona Fine Arts Commission from 2015-2021, where, as Chair, she led the initiation of a new grant program and the City of Winona Creative Laureate position. In addition, she served on the City of Winona’s Arts and Culture Steering Committee, and was a frequent grant panelist and artistic evaluator for the Minnesota State Arts Board. She is an alumna of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals’ Leadership Fellows Program and was a participant in the National Dance Presenting Forum at Jacob’s Pillow in 2019.
Remick graduated from the Eastman School of Music, where she majored in vocal performance, and received her master’s degree in Performing Arts Management from Brooklyn College.
DANCECleveland, a Cleveland, Ohio-based non-profit, is one of a handful of presenters in the nation that is dedicated solely to the presentation of modern and contemporary dance. The centerpiece of the organization’s programming is its annual performance series. The performances are surrounded by an array of educational outreach events including artist-run master classes, residency programs, student matinees, pre-performance lectures and post-performance Q&A sessions, designed both to break artistic boundaries and provide community access to the dance aesthetic and dance luminaries that DANCECleveland brings to Northeast Ohio.
