DANCECleveland Announces 2010-2011 Season of Stellar Headliners

DANCECleveland, northeast Ohio's premier dance presenting organization, will launch its 55th season with a stellar line-up of some of the best in contemporary dance featuring the variety that fans of this annual dance series have come to expect.

Companies coming to northeast Ohio include: Keigwin+Company, a hot young New York troupe; Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, the celebrated repertory company with bravura technique; FLY: Five First Ladies of Dance, featuring solo performances by extraordinary dancer/choreographers; Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, the beloved ballet parody dance phenomenon; RIOULT, a bold and exciting dance theater company; and The Parsons Dance Company with The East Village Opera Company, the highly successful Parsons paired with live music and more. DANCECleveland subscribers will also have an opportunity to see the return of the Joffrey Ballet with the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center, a hit of last season's offerings.

"We're excited to continue our tradition of community partnerships to bring our audiences this ambitious season," says Pam Young, DANCECleveland executive director. "We're pleased to continue our relationships with Cuyahoga Community College, The University of Akron, E.J. Thomas Hall and The Cleveland Orchestra. We're also welcoming two new partners for the coming year. Oberlin College and Conservatory Theater and Dance Program will co-present the Five First Ladies of Dance and Opera Cleveland will work with us to bring the Parsons Dance Company to Cleveland."

Opening the season will be the return of The Joffrey Ballet with The Cleveland Orchestra to Blossom Music Center on Labor Day weekend for two performances Saturday, Sept. 4 and Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, featuring a repertory program, to be announced. Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor Tito Muoz will lead the performances. For the second year, DANCECleveland subscribers will have the opportunity to add The Joffrey Ballet to their season subscription. Last season some 10,000 people attended these Blossom performances by one of the most heralded dance companies in America.

Keigwin+Company will perform on Saturday, Oct. 2. 2010 at E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron. This will be the third year of collaboration between DANCECleveland, E.J. Thomas Hall and the University of Akron. The witty and engaging Keigwin+Company was founded in 2003 in New York City by Larry Keigwin, praised for his "extraordinary feats of dancing." (The New York Times). A highlight of the local performance will be Bolero: Akron, a piece that will be created using from 50-100 community performers onstage. This production is inspired by the original 2007 commission, Bolero: NYC, described by The New York Times as "a joyful and breathtakingly clever celebration of the city and its people."

"The kinetic delight of Keigwin's high-powered dancing is infectious, and he doesn't shy away from the 'e' word: entertainment." Dance Magazine

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago comes to the Ohio Theatre in Playhouse Square on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, co-presented by Tri-C Presents. The company holds a unique place in American dance as a repository of work from some the best choreographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is recognized as a leader in the creation and development of new choreography, unique collaborations and innovative production concepts. Since its beginnings in 1977, Hubbard Street has attracted nationally known choreographers, including Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Margo Sappington, Daniel Ezralow, Nacho Duato, Jiri Kylian and Twyla Tharp, all of whom have helped shape the company's repertory. Hubbard Street has appeared nationally and internationally at celebrated dance venues and has been presented by some of the most cutting-edge dance programs around the country.

"Take a deep breath, because Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is going to take your breath away." The Washington Post

FLY: Five First Ladies of Dance will perform at Oberlin College, Hall Auditorium Theater, on Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010. Co-presented with Oberlin College and Conservatory Theater and Dance Program, FLY features performances by some of the most influential contemporary dancer/choreographers in history: Germaine Acogny, Carmen de Lavallade, Dianne McIntyre, Bebe Miller and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. They have helped shape the language and trajectory of contemporary dance in the U.S. and abroad. At their landmark Ohio appearance, each woman will perform a solo work. Senegalese and French, Acogny is considered the 'mother of contemporary African dance." Her critically acclaimed all-male dance troupe Compagnie Jant-Bi garnered her a Bessie Award for choreography. Zollar, who studied in NYC with McIntyre, founded Urban Bush Women in 1984. She is a Bessie recipient and most recently was named a U.S. Artists 'Wynn Fellow.' De Lavallade danced with the Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theater and the NYC Opera before founding PARADIGM with Gus Solomons, Jr. Native Clevelander McIntyre has developed a distinctive body of work and received a host of accolades including a 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship for Choreography. Miller, who has been making dances for over 25 years, formed the Bebe Miller Company in 1985. She has been honored with four Bessies.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo will be at the Ohio Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, co-presented with Tri-C Presents. Since their beginnings in the 1970s in late-late shows at off-off Broadway lofts, the Trocks, as they are called by their legion of fans, have become an international dance phenomenon. Their frenzied tour schedule has included six tours to Australia and New Zealand, 24 trips to Japan (where their annual tours have created a nationwide cult following), 10 to South America, three to South Africa and 58 European tours. This all male company performs a full range of ballet and modern dance styles, delighting and amusing the most knowledgeable, as well as novices, in the audience. In their productions, the company blends a loving knowledge of dance with a comic approach not to mention the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces.

"Dainty, they ain't. But plenty of ballerina hopefuls might envy the technique, strength and chutzpah of [the Trocks], the troupe that mocks the art by more or less mastering it."

The Chicago Tribune

RIOULT will perform on Saturday, April. 2, 2011, at the Ohio Theatre. Founded in 1994, RIOULT fast became an established name in modern dance with a reputation for creating and presenting the sensual, articulate and exquisitely musical works of Pascal Rioult. Born in France, Rioult is a former principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Repertory for the Cleveland performance will include Bolero, featuring Rioult's bold and unique interpretation of the famous musical score, and Wien, set to Ravel's La Valse, in which the Viennese waltz serves as a premonition of evil.

"Rioult is one of the most adept and courageous choreographers in mainstream modern dance today." Backstage

The Parsons Dance Company with The East Village Opera Company closes the season with a performance on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Ohio Theatre co-presented by Opera Cleveland. Parsons brings the most ambitious production in the history of his 22-year-old dance company to Cleveland. Titled Remember Me, this high-energy mix of contemporary American dance, opera and rock music combines the athleticism of Parsons Dance with an exhilarating live vocal performance by recording artists EVOC. The work creates a storyline that connects EVOC's signature operative arias with Parsons' original choreography resulting in a thoroughly modern re-telling of a classic story of tragic love. Parsons Dance tours some 32 weeks each year at prestigious theaters and festivals around the world. It is the only dance company in history to perform at all three Spoleto Festivals Italy, Australia and the U.S. in a single year.

"David Parsons is one of the great movers of modern dance." The New York Times
